LAHORE: At least 10 labourers were killed and dozens injured when an under construction factory collapsed in Lahore on Wednesday evening, rescue and city administration officials said.
So far, more than 30 injured labourers have been shifted to hospitals where they are given emergency medical treatment.
The factory is located in Sundar Industrial Estate of the provincial capital.
The rescue officials further said that around 100 people are feared trapped under the debris and the death toll is expected to rise.
Rescue teams extricated the labourers from the rubble and shifted them to the hospital.
The factory manufactured polythene bags and many underage workers also worked there.
Rescue officials are currently facing difficulties in carrying out relief operation, however, they are using heavy machinery to pull out bodies and survivors..
It is a three-storey building, while the fourth storey was currently under construction.
A labourer Rafique, while talking to Dawn, said that they were carrying out the construction work on fourth floor when suddenly the building collapsed.
He said that more than 150 labourers were working in the factory at the time of incident.
Eye witnesses say they can hear the voice and screams of people trapped under the building.
The director general Rescue 1122 is himself present on the incident scene and is monitoring the relief and rescue operation.
Emergency has been declared in all hospitals as rescue workers fear rise in death toll.
The cause of the building collapse is currently not clear but it comes over a week after a magnitude-7.5 earthquake hit the northern part of the country, killing 273 people and damaging nearly 75,000 homes.
This is a developing story and will be updated accordingly.
